An international traveler whose solo journey around the world was highlighted in Conde Nast Traveler and exposed in her award-winning short LONELY PLANET, Alex Burunova’s star is rising rapidly. A festival darling and described by industry insiders as “one to watch” in the growing world of great female directors, Alex Burunova’s work has been showcased at over 60 festivals, both domestically and internationally, including Oscar-qualifying Los Angeles SFF, Palm Springs SF, Cannes Short Film Corner, Newport Beach FF, to name just a few. Hand-picked by Lifetime/A&E’s new digital network to helm their series, MEASUREMENTS, Alex’s deft hand behind the camera resulted in the most watched series on the channel.
Mentored by some of the finest directors working today, Alex has worked alongside the Coen Brother’s on TRUE GRIT and on the blockbuster MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL while logging time at Lucas Film on CLONE WARS. Shooting and directing several documentaries and short narratives in Moscow, Dominican Republic, Belarus, Turkey and Italy helped develop her voice as a female filmmaker. A naturally gifted and nuanced director, Alex hails from a long line of artistic European renegades and creative pioneers. Her grandfather was the sculptor-in-residence commissioned by the Kremlin to recreate the bust of Lenin in several different iterations around Moscow. Her mother, Tatiana Burunova, a famous saxophone player from her native Belaurs, helmed the first all-girls band in Russia and traveled worldwide with a young Alex in tow. As a result, Alex’s unconventional upbringing and global perspective of people, places and things helped define her keen eye and ability to tell incredible stories and connect with the masses through a unique lens and voice. Alex’s next global film, SUNRISE OVER THE HIMALAYAS, follows her own personal journey of meeting the Dalai Lama while almost being kidnapped by ISIS.
